Doing this activity was interesting and different. It’s not everyday that you go out in public to clean. While it was definitely something that not many people have done before it was also very fulfilling. It felt nice to know that with a lot of hands and some time we could clean such a huge sculpture.
Ukeles’ cleaning and Serra’s flinging of molten are significantly different from one another. Ukeles’ cleaning is harmless and helpful while Serra’s is destructive. I believe neither one of these acts is art. Art is something through which the creator expresses their emotions and in turn is something that provokes emotions in the viewer. Usually art is something that is used to express one person’s view of the world. While both Ukele and Serra are expressing their emotions neither one really fulfills the viewer aspect which is why I believe neither one is art.
Art is almost like an extension of ones self. It is a way for people to connect with each other. Art is not just one set thing it can be many things. The artist maybe trying to express one thing but the viewer may find a whole other thing but that is the beauty of it. As long as it is something that stems from expression, creativity, and emotion it can be considered art. The thing about art is that a lot of the time it is subjective, what one person considers art another person might not.
“Women’s work” is art. For me personally if the work can portray and relay emotion then it should be considered art.
If I were to clean a star on Hollywood Blvd. it would be Selena’s or Kristen Bell’s.
